Did the VMA’s Rock’n’Roll or Fizzle Flat This Year?

Did everyone else think that the VMA’s were boring this year?

The red carpet was white. What’s up with that? Everyone seemed to wearing black and white and nothing special, on the pre-show.

Except for Lady Gaga, who always wears something interesting. Her first dress by Alexander McQueen, was interesting, yes, but way over-done. JUST TOO MUCH! Yes, I know that’s what Gaga is known for. But I do not think all of her costumes are totally overdone.

Her black leather dress probably weighed twice as much as she did. She had a terrible time maneuvering it while she went on stage to pick up one of her many awards. But I really liked it! It was classy.

Her meat dress. I did not realize that was what it was. Hmmm. I still do not know if it was real, as in fresh, shall we say, cold cuts? Or was it faux meat?

It was late in the show, and I caught a glimpse of it, but did not really SEE it. It did have a nice silhouette. I had noted that. I liked the dangling parts. We have been doing lots of dangling parts on various costumes, the last couple of years.

I think her favorite moment was probably accepting an award from Cher. Cher decided to pull out a little old outfit from 20 years ago: a classic Cher/Bob Mackie, from her TURN BACK TIME video. Was it the original? I am guessing not, but of course she did NOT look like a 64-year old! We should all be so lucky!

Of course in a previous generation-mine, Cher was shocking audiences with what SHE was wearing. Today, it is Lady Gaga. I may raise my eyebrows, but I also always smile, too.

I received my BFA degree from The Minneapolis College of Art and Design, back a few decades ago. Our professors stressed a couple of things. One of them was to ALWAYS document your work, which I took to heart. I am only missing a handful of photos of garments that I have designed personally, and what Satin Stitches has created, over years and years.

The other important thing was that it was important to make an impact. Do things to get noticed. Art does not have to be serious.

A huge example is one of my favorite Minnesota creative people- Prince. When he first came on the scene, he was totally outrageous in his onstage costuming. Yes, it was costuming. He had incredible talent, yes, but he was NOTICED because of how he presented himself.

An adage in the art world is- Presentation is everything, or at least important. My husband, the engineer, of course will say function is everything. Of course we need BOTH.

The VMA’s are known for being rock-n-roll edgy. Some achieved this look and many did not. Katy Perry had the look. Ke$ha in her garbage bag dress had the look.

Ho-hum Rihanna!

Ho-hum Rihanna!

OK, what about others on the show? Mostly, pretty boring. And then there was the deal with Taylor Swift and Kanye. And Eminem and Rihanna. Costuming? Ho hum. And Justin Bieber just looked silly. One of the Jersey Shore girls looked classy. The rest? Let’s just not talk about them.

On another note, I am so looking forward to next week’s Dancing With the Stars and real GLAM dance costuming! How about you?
