DWTS- Season 11: Week 4 Costume Critique

Satin Stitches is deep into our busy time, right now. And Monday night, our local television station pushed Dancing With the Stars until 1:05 in the morning, so we could enjoy our Minnesota Vikings lose miserably to the New York Jets. Hmm.
So, I stayed up late for the game, but not late enough for DWTS. I tried to fit in watching the Monday night show while also catching this week’s Glee, and watching the Results show last night. Multi-tasking is not all that it is cracked up to be. So my costume critique will be shorter this week.
It was Latin Night, and the hype was hot and raunchy. Who knew it was going to be our sweet Mrs. Brady? Sizzle-sizzle!
There were some stunning costumes this week, per usual. But it’s always surprising to see who was wearing the stunners. Last season I hated many of Anna’s costumes. This season? Not so much.
In fact I LOVED her Latin costume this week. It was either cobalt blue or purple, but whatever the jewel tone, it was lovely. It was asymmetrical and even though it was cut to THERE, with a very open back, it was modestly cut. Well, everything is relative, right? It had beautifully applied beaded fringe on the body part of her costume. Very nice angles and classic sophisticated lines.
Jennifer’s Argentine Tango dress was also classic, sophisticated and stunning. Blinged-out, sheer looking black lace is usually stunning. Lined with nude-toned fabric, the pattern of the lace is showcased. And edge the beautiful lace with a scallop, you have a beautiful costume. Lots of angles, with a deep V in the front and the back accented Jennifer’s dress.
Audrina’s deep red costume was also a beautiful Latin costume. It was monochromatic with lots of glitz. Car wash panels and a middle-connecting piece added to the interest of this costume.
Black was big, this week, and Florence also danced in black. Once again, the costumer has done a bang-up job with featuring Florence’s good features, and minimizing any aged skin etc. Her costume was flattering to her and accented her performance. Covered where necessary and flirting where possible. I enjoyed the large, chunky jewels that were scattered all over her costume, almost as much I enjoyed her, all over Corky!
These were all winning costumes, this week. The disappointing costumes were worn by Cheryl, Brandy, Karina, Bristol and both Lacey and Kyle. Why single out Kyle, the only guy? The guys were wearing nicely tailored outfits, generally speaking. But when will the costumers outfit Kyle with a grownup, sophisticated outfit? The pink banding on his vest was a very juvenile accent. Come on, he deserves better!
Lacy was wearing a clown outfit. No, how did I REALLY feel about it? Her costume was not very attractive. She is still trying to be quote-unquote-edgy. It looked like it was a giant tattoo on a naked body, with a ruffled mess for a skirt. It was my least favorite costume of the week! Hated it!
Another tattoo-inspired costume was worn by Cheryl. Her costume had giant scrolling black flowers on white mesh. The silhouette was fine, but the decoration, left me cold. Cheryl usually has gorgeous costumes-this was a disappointment.
Brandy was wearing a little white-encrusted ONE-SIE with a sheer caftan-like drape. If you have read my previous DWTS blogs, then you know that I am not a fan of covering up beautiful bodies with a fabric drape that does not let you see the body silhouette.
Karina’s costume, I mostly liked, but then her cutouts were just a tad skimpy. Her taupe-costume had many fabulous features. I loved the real-straps and I loved the asymmetrical look with the long beaded fringe.
What I did not love, was how LOW the costume rode on her hip. It seemed BELOW her hip, and just too low for me. Yes, I know she is incredibly fit and toned, and should show off her body. I love that she has been adding a belt at her natural waistline-it seems to help camouflage just how skimpy her costumes can be. But I would have liked it, even an inch or two higher!
And then Bristol was just a little bit plain-Jane. Wearing some sort of glitzy black leotard with a belted, rhinestoned white shirt. Something that anyone could easily put together.
I am really not addressing what the guys wore. Mostly pretty bland, from nicely tailored tuxedos to lots of shirts and pants for the guys. The Situation took his last week to totally bare his chest, for all to see. His open red shirt was paired with an open bow tie and black pants, held up with black suspenders. Again, obviously something anyone could put together, provided they have the chest and abs to show off! We will miss him-he really did try his best!
Hopefully next week, I will be able to enjoy both shows AND Glee, without having to multitask. They dancing is only getting better. Let’s hope the costuming gets better, too!
