Wear Your Patriotism This July!

July Fourth. What do YOU think about? Fireworks, picnics, red-white-and-blue, stars and stripes, parades, right? And maybe glitzy costumes and national dance competitions, too? Over the years, Satin Stitches has been asked to create many different Patriotic dance costumes. Some have been for dance soloists and some have been for entire dance teams – either for studio lines or for high school dance teams

Satin Stitches’ FAVORITE Patriotic Solo Costume!

Satin Stitches’ FAVORITE Patriotic Solo Costume!

We have designed and created several camouflaged outfits, or military uniforms, some for hip-hop styles and even some that were rhinestoned, for very glamorous looks. But my FAVORITE Patriotic solo costume is shown here. It was created for a solo dance performance. It was created for a very emotional, patriotic endeavor. This costume was created for an auction to raise money for the victims of 9-11, in New York City.

We usually create specifically for a client, but in this case, we were asked to create something we liked, and then we hoped that someone would fall in love with our costume and HAVE to have it. I never found out who really wore it, but I hope they felt as proud to wear it, as we did, to create it! The lady wearing it was a model with ‘Dance Spirit Magazine’, who staged this national auction, just several months after the World Trade Center Towers’ horrific collapse.

I personally love the symbols of our freedom, here in the United States of America. Our fifty stars symbolize our states and the thirteen red and white stripes symbolize the first thirteen colonies of our country. Of course adding some glitz with sequins, beaded appliques and beaded fringe just improves those geometric shapes, in my book!

I think that our founding fathers did a fine job of choosing our symbolic colors and shapes! They are much prettier than Italy’s red-green-white or Sweden’s sky blue and yellow. Or am I just prejudiced? Maybe!

As I sit and reflect on my own Patriotism, this week, I think I am feeling it more than usual, as we are in the middle of a presidential election year. No matter what your politics, I think it is exciting to start fresh this November, and try someone new, to head the best country in the world. We have come a long way, in this country to FINALLY have a woman and an African-American as preliminary choices for our country’s top job.

Good going, America! In any case, it looks like we will be choosing between a former POW veteran-senior citizen, and a younger, ground-breaking man to try and turn our country around, from our current bad economy and state of war. Who ever gets the vote, I hope they are able to do a good job.

I hope that everyone, who is eligible to vote this fall, will take some time and study the issues, and use their right to vote, wisely. And not only for President, but also for all the other elected officials and to help decide all the local issues that will be on the ballot. Nothing irritates me more, than listening to people complain about issues, but then do nothing. Make the effort to express your opinion, by voting.

There is plenty of time, so don’t let this opportunity to make a difference, slip by. And keep being proud of your country by singing and dancing to songs that show your patriotism this holiday week, and all year long!
