Preventative care for your costumes is important! 'A stitch in time saves nine' is sage advice, and it could possibly save you some embarrassment, too!
Here are a few pointers for making preventative care a part of your costume routine:
- When you receive your new costumes or when you pull out your old costumes from your costume closet, always inspect the stitching.
- Check for dangling/hanging threads. Don't pull on them, just investigate! If it is a chain stitch, it will totally unravel the seam if you pull on it.
- If it is NOT a chain stitch, check to see if there is a break in the stitching. If so, restitch this area closed before you trim off the dangling/hanging thread.
- Check to see if there are any missing stitches anywhere on your costume. Doing this could prevent a wardrobe malfunction that was just waiting to happen!
Remember, a well-timed restitch may avert an unraveling costume - and could possibly save you from embarrassment happening during your performance!
Be sure to pay attention to the details and always practice preventative care with your performance garments.
