‘Unfortunate' Costume Designs

Posted by Deborah Nelson on Fri, Jul 05, 2019 @ 06:07 AM

Sometimes our best costume intentions go badly (both intentions by our clients and by our design staff). Sometimes we don’t ‘see’ what could be an ‘oops’ moment! Thankfully, we haven’t had more than a hand full, in the 4 decades of custom costume creation! As I’ve been going through old performance photos from the years before digitizing, I have recalled a few instances that stand out to me. These are all group costumes.

Many years ago, we created a leotard and pants for a group…I truly don’t recall what type of group…it must have been either a dance team or drill team (yes, they are different!) This particular costume/uniform had sort of balloons on the front bodice. This design was NOT dreamed up by our design team, but was presented with sketches, by our client. We created their prototype and it was approved. These ‘balloons’ inspired thoughts of something else that wasn’t very ‘family friendly’ in our opinion, as we looked at the results.

Most times an instance like this isn’t ‘caught’ in the design/sketching stage, but comes to life when the sample/prototype is created. It seemed glaring to us! But the client was very happy with their design.

Mermaid Fantasies for Dance Spirit Magazine!

Posted by Deborah Nelson on Mon, Oct 15, 2018 @ 11:10 AM

‘Dance Spirit’ Magazine occasionally solicits costumes for their magazine editorial content. For specific costume requests, they send us an email that gives us a heads up on their desired theme. If we have a particular costume that fits their parameters, we have about a week or so to send the costume for their photo shoot.

Summer Museum Field Trips

Posted by Deborah Nelson on Thu, Aug 16, 2018 @ 15:08 PM

As we head towards the fall, make good use of the summer weeks that are still available. Don’t put off those trips any longer. Be sure and fit in at least a long weekend or two before the ‘official’ summer is over. It’s easier to count on OK weather before the snow starts falling!

I have been watching all of the Award Shows this season, but I haven’t taken the time to take notes to prepare a critique blog…until now, with THE AWARDS SHOW – The OSCARS! Not only was there a 2-hour Red Carpet Show, but I also caught the PREVIEW to the preview red carpet show.

Yes, yes, I have been taking a few weeks off, enjoying the summer in the evenings and weekends. But some of my COSTUME CRITIQUE fans have missed me, and my ruminations. So here I am, glued to my telly, enjoying Cat Deeley and her lover-ly accent. Yes, I wrote this during- right after the show, but did not have the time to edit and post until now.

Watching past shows and past seasons, I could always count on fun fashion styles from Cat, and cheeky British accents from Cat and Nigel. I was not disappointed tonight!

Costuming for the dance contestants, however, had some bright spots and some very dull spots. Contrary to the opinions in the recent blog titled Costumes- They can Make or Break You-costumes DO matter. The blogger suggests that costumes are annoying, I believe the CAN make or break your performance.

MY March Madness: Costume Fashions Shows!!!

I just pulled 35 costumes for another Satin Stitches fashion show this weekend. Last Friday I pulled 30 costumes that I sent to All-Pro 3’s REAL DEAL workshop in Houston for this Sunday. We are presenting some of the same styles that Satin Stitches presented at the NFL Cheerleading Director’s Conference, just a couple weeks ago. I have not been involved with so many fashion shows in such a short time for years! Maybe it is MARCH MADNESS?

So many blog topics this week, and so little time! I was all set to blog about one topic, when I thought it would be appropriate to discuss the many costumes that our Minnesota high school dance teams were wearing at our State Tournament this last week. Such decisions!
