What Can We Learn From DWTS?

Posted by Deborah Nelson on Mon, Oct 03, 2016 @ 15:10 PM

As I write this article, the newest season of “Dancing with the Stars” has just started. I am again blogging my ‘Costume Critique’ each week. If you aren’t familiar with my blog, I watch DWTS and take notes on what I love and hate about all the star’s costumes and their partner’s costumes.

I am a dance costume/fashion designer, and have been designing custom dance costumes since the late 1970’s, after my stint at a high-priced woman’s clothing manufacturer in downtown Minneapolis for 4 years. (I was in the design/patternmaking department and worked directly with our owner/designer, cutting department, sample maker and sewing department to manufacture 5 lines of quality sportswear, per year.) Prior to this, I was assistant designer to a plus-sized polyester pantsuit manufacturer across the street on ‘Fashion Avenue’, right after college. I had completed my 4-year BFA degree with a Fashion Design major at MCAD.

I have been watching all of the Award Shows this season, but I haven’t taken the time to take notes to prepare a critique blog…until now, with THE AWARDS SHOW – The OSCARS! Not only was there a 2-hour Red Carpet Show, but I also caught the PREVIEW to the preview red carpet show.

Yes, yes, I have been taking a few weeks off, enjoying the summer in the evenings and weekends. But some of my COSTUME CRITIQUE fans have missed me, and my ruminations. So here I am, glued to my telly, enjoying Cat Deeley and her lover-ly accent. Yes, I wrote this during- right after the show, but did not have the time to edit and post until now.

Watching past shows and past seasons, I could always count on fun fashion styles from Cat, and cheeky British accents from Cat and Nigel. I was not disappointed tonight!

Costuming for the dance contestants, however, had some bright spots and some very dull spots. Contrary to the opinions in the recent blog titled Costumes- They can Make or Break You-costumes DO matter. TV Show “Fashion Rocks 5” -Rocked the House!

With all the dancers, singers, dancing singers and singing dancers along with many dressed up celebrities, this benefit concert spotlighted trend-setting fashions and stages costumes, wonderfully.

I miss the old variety shows from their heyday in the late 1960s. My costume-fashion designer hero, Bob Mackie designed over-the-top costumes for all the entertainers on The Carol Burnett Show and The Sonny and Cher Show, two of the biggest variety shows. Mr. Mackie inspired me to go for the glitz and glamour in my career!

There might not be crying in baseball, but there is definitely crying in fashion! There were some tears, some stomping of feet, some jubilation, and some dismay during the finale of Project Runway, this last week.
