Hot Costume Care Tip: Not Liking What You See in Your Costume Closet?

Posted by Deborah Nelson on Tue, Apr 16, 2019 @ 16:04 PM

Are you looking in your team costume closet and not liking what you see?

Perhaps you have...

  • Costumes that don’t fit your theme this year?
  • Costumes that don’t fit new team members?
  • Costumes that look sad or frumpy?
  • Costumes that just don’t have that "WOW" factor?

What can you do?

  • New theme? Brainstorm with co-coaches, directors or even team members, as to how to add something to existing costumes to help them fit your new theme.
  • New team members and sizes? Ask your costume source if they can duplicate your old costumes to make additional sizes that will fit your new team.
  • Costumes looking drab? Employ a talented alterations person or task a talented booster parent to give the costumes the ‘once over’ and refurbish as needed.
  • Lacking that "WOW" factor? To increase the glitz and glam, add rhinestones or accessories to refresh your look
And, finally, if you need a complete overhaul of your costumes, don't just let them sit in a closet somewhere to collect dust! Take photos and record sizes to sell your unwanted costumes to another group who just may appreciate a deal!  Then, with the funds earned from selling or lending out your costumes, you can purchase new costumes!

Hot Costume Care Tip: Plan to reuse, recycle team costumes

Posted by Deborah Nelson on Tue, Apr 09, 2019 @ 06:04 AM

Are you tired of this season's costumes?

If so, follow these easy steps to ensure you get the most out of your old costumes:

  • If you plan to order new team costumes this year, formulate a plan for what to do with your old costumes. Don’t just toss them aside at the back of your team’s closet or send them out with the trash.
  • If you took great care of your costumes throughout the season, DON’T STOP when your season is over! Check over your costumes for any and all needed repairs.
  • If your costumes are dirty, but launderable. take care of it right away! Don’t wait until ‘later’.
  • If your costumes are stinky, air them out at the VERY least. If possible, treat them with FRESH AGAIN®!
  • Tally the numbers of your costumes and accessories, so you always have a record at your fingertips.

Now you are ready to:

  • SAVE your costumes ‘as is’ for a future routine
  • DONATE your costumes to a deserving, less financially sound team
  • SELL your costumes to a budget-conscious team
  • TRADE your costumes with a like-minded team
  • TRANSFORM your costumes into something NEW!

Dance Costume Spring Cleaning

Posted by Deborah Nelson on Wed, Apr 03, 2019 @ 13:04 PM

We all do it! We buy new clothes and then we just keep accumulating. We hate to throw things out, so our closet becomes overcrowded, making it difficult to see what we actually have. The outfits that we don’t wear become harder to find and, in turn, don’t stand a chance to ever be worn again.

What we should do when clothing begins to pile up, is what all experts suggest: if we haven’t worn something in the past year, we most likely will never wear it again and should purge it from our closets. The same holds true for dance costumes.  If you haven’t worn a particular costume in the past year, it’s time to send it packing.

Traveling Safely With Your Dance Costume

Posted by Deborah Nelson on Tue, Mar 05, 2019 @ 12:03 PM

February this year has been the snowiest February since 1962 – the year my baby brother was born during another huge snowstorm, the first week of March! Traveling can be problematic with the many flight delays and cancellations, plus difficulty with car travel. Securing your competition dance costumes may be farther down on your list of concerns. BUT, don’t lose track of your costumes!

If you haven’t had a problem with lost luggage or having forgotten to pack a particular outfit or travel item, then you are a very lucky person! Lost luggage can be a nightmare. Will you ever see your favorite pair of sandals again? Or your favorite jeans? Or – horror of horrors – your beautiful, custom, competition dance costume? It is much easier to replay a pair of sandals, a swimsuit or your favorite pair of jeans than a CUSTOM competition dance costume.
