A Few of My Favorite Things

Posted by Deborah Nelson on Tue, Dec 03, 2019 @ 15:12 PM

“The Sound of Music” debuted as a movie release by 20th Century Fox in 1965. It became a holiday classic even though it didn’t have anything to do with Christmas. But there were lyrical references to sleigh bells, snowflakes, silver-white winters and brown paper packages tied up with strings. Here are some of the lyrics:

Brown Paper Packages Tied Up With StringRaindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens,

bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens,

brown paper packages tied up with strings,

these are a few of my favorite things.

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels,

door bells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles.

Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings.

These are a few of my favorite things.

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes,

snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes,

silver white winters that melt into springs,

these are a few of my favorite things.

In honor of December being a Christmas/Holiday month, I am going to share a few of my favorite things! Without the rhyming…sorry!

I love creating beautiful costumes. I love my company, Satin Stitches Ltd. I love my talented employees. I love being the boss. I love our solo and team customers (OK, nearly all of our 40+ years of customers). I love our busy season. I love our slow season. I love watching all types of dance performances, whether the performers are wearing Satin Stitches’ costumes, or not.

I love sparkles. I love rhinestones. I love sequins and beads. I love feathers, of all types…boas, tufts, ostrich, feather fringes…. I love beautiful, flowing fabrics. I love lace fabric and lace appliques. I love bright colors. I love pretty pastels. I love dramatic black fabrics and costumes. I still love purple and pink.

I love dance and performance costumes. I love to watch ladies and girls dancing. I love to watch couples dancing and I love watching men dance. I love costumes that are monochromatic. I love some non-monochromatic costumes. I love my collection of Bob Mackie Barbie Dolls.

I love costumes that fit. I love assisting my clients with creating beautiful, flattering costumes. I love perfectly shaped bodies. I love imperfectly shaped bodies. I love watching very talented dancers and love watching lesser talented dancers ‘give it their all’ and ‘leave it all on the floor’ dancing their hearts out!

I love to discover and learn new things, especially if they have something to do with fashion, costumes, fabrics, trims and how all these items are created and manufactured.  I love being able to remember what colors and details look like, even though I can’t recall history or mathematics or scientific facts from high school (my husband does, and I suspect my son does, as well).

I love sharing my knowledge, based on my amateur and professional career in the fashion/costume design and manufacturing business, with anyone who cares to listen. I love writing articles. I love writing blogs. I love telling people all about Satin Stitches, and how it works.

I love that thirteen pieces of my personal and professional collection of clothing/costumes and my saved/archived supporting photos and paperwork, including published articles for nearly 4 decades are being archived by the Minnesota Historical Society, for future online study, quarterly published articles and potential exhibit. I am told their archiving process may take up to a year or so. Additionally, The Anoka County Historical Society has 3 pieces that they will archive and have available for future exhibits.

I’m sure I’m missing many of my favorite things, but in conclusion, I love my husband. I love my kids. I love all my family. I love my nearly 92-year old Mom. My entire upbringing and my family have made it possible for me to realize my dream of creating fashion and costumes as Satin Stitches Ltd! …Bring on the new year. I hope that we will have good 20-20 vision, moving forward.
