Melissa web photoHi! I'm Melissa, a member of our Satin Stitches Customer Service Team, and a former Minnesota Vikings Cheerleader. Deborah asked me to present some tips for all of you who are planning on trying out for a professional Dance/Cheer team this coming year. Here goes...

Properly preparing for your audition is half the battle. Looking back on my first professional audition, there are probably a few things I would have done differently.

First, take some time to spend on the website of the team that you wish to audition for. Of course, take note of the requirements (what to bring, what to wear, age limits, etc.) but also look for pictures or videos from past auditions. This can give you a good idea of what other girls are wearing and the style of dance/cheer that will be taught.

While an amazing costume probably won’t make or break your audition, it can definitely help you feel confident and sexy. Some teams require you to wear an outfit consisting of their colors, while others are open to whatever color you feel like wearing that day! One thing that is important is to make sure your costume FITS well. An unflattering cut or fit can ruin your look. Invest in a good bra (Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy is my go-to) and a pair of tights and nylons that match your skintone if you will be wearing shorts or a skirt.

Hair and makeup will round out your look. It’s a good idea to do a trial run at home of your hairstyle and makeup before the audition. A subtly smoky eye, lush lashes and a red lip will help your features pop. Remember that a smile is always your best accessory! And it never hurts to have a bit of a glow. Spray or airbrush tanner is the favored option (no tanning booths!). I recommend doing two different sessions with the last one a few days before your audition. This will give you time to soften any harsh lines or buff out any mistakes.
