Preparing for P-R-O By Melissa: Custom Dance Costume Design

Melissa Booth cropI am proud to be representing Satin Stitches this month at the P-R-O Convention in Atlanta. During my time as a pro cheerleader, I never got the opportunity to take classes at a convention like this, but all that is going to change. I was very excited to learn that I would be able to participate in the classes alongside all of the other dancers and cheerleaders!

To top it off, Satin Stitches has offered to make me an outfit of my own to wear. I am not a designer, but I do love to doodle, so I came up with a few sketches of possible styles. The first thing I considered was the color. If you were to look in my closet, or even my house for that matter, you would see mostly neutrals. I surround myself with a lot of black, brown, taupe and gray. Any “colors” that I wear are usually dark, rich tones such as olive, plum, or rust. We have a beautiful bronze mesh that we used for a skirt that we presented at the NFL Cheerleaders Directors Conference in Dallas this winter. I immediately thought of this fabric to incorporate into my design. It’s important to choose a color that compliments your skin tone and hair, but also a color that you feel comfortable in. Sure, a bright, punchy outfit will stand out, but I would definitely feel out of place wearing bright primary colors.

The second thing I considered was the overall style of the outfit. Did I want to go for athletic and sporty? Girly and feminine? Sleek and tailored? My style leans towards girly and minimalist. I chose a halter-top with a ruffled neckline and a ruffled skirt with attached shorts. The bodice of the halter and the attached shorts would be made from a black “wet look” Spandex, with the ruffle on the top and the skirt made from the bronze mesh. After consulting with Michael, one of our designers, my outfit was put into production…

Stay tuned to find out what happened when I tried everything on for the first time!
