Preparing for P-R-O By Melissa: Custom Dance Costume Design Part 3

describe the imageMy outfit for the P-R-O Convention in Atlanta has been completed! After ensuring the perfect fit, our rhinestone specialist attached hundreds of copper Swarovski rhinestones to the ruffle of the top and the waistband of the shorts for some added glitz. It turned out beautifully, and I cannot wait to show it off!

Although the creation of my outfit involved a little trial and error, I was able to end up with a great costume after taking into consideration my shape and how the costume would move on my body. There are many other things to consider when creating a uniform for either a professional team or for a solo performance.

First, consider the environment in which the uniform will be worn. Inside or outside? On a basketball court, outdoor football field, or on a stage? Artificial, natural, or stage lighting? All these factors should have an impact on the types of fabrics you use and the embellishments you add. Swarovski rhinestones are stunning, with having the most impact under stage lights. From a distance in an outdoor arena, they may not have the same WOW factor. Consider different fabrics and color details for a field uniform. Ruffles, braiding, color changes, fringe, buckles, or lacings are just a few interesting elements you could incorporate.

Next, think about the comfort and practicality of the uniform. Brief-cut bottoms are great for showing off a ‘rocking’ body at professional auditions, but not the most comfortable to wear for several hours during a game. A fully sequined halter-top looks beautiful, but the insides of your arms will be in pain after rubbing against those sequins for any extended period of time. Confidence comes from being comfortable in what you’re wearing, so make sure that you’re ‘covered’ in that area!

See you in Atlanta!
