DWTS Season 24 Week 10 Finals Costume Critique

Posted by Deborah Nelson on Wed, May 24, 2017 @ 15:05 PM

Another exciting season of “Dancing with the Stars” has come and gone! This week, we were treated to two nights of fabulous dancing and not-so-bad costuming (spoken in the true ‘Minnesotan’ speak). This is my last chance (for a few months) to spew my biased (pun intended) thoughts with what I perceive as good and bad custom dance/performance costuming.

An affirmation that all costuming is related: I’m excited to say that I was just alerted to a YouTube video of a high school dance team performance. This team was wearing silk and spandex dip-dyed ombre skirts that Satin Stitches created for them, a few months ago. This design was inspired by a ballroom dance gown photo that was submitted to our design team. In my custom business, we get inspirations for one type of performance costume, from MANY types of performance costumes.

DWTS Season 24 Week 9 Semi-Finals-Costume Critique

I apologize for posting this ‘Dancing with the Stars’ costume critique late this week!... OK, not really…as I was enjoying a Danube River cruise, and we had just visited Vienna on Mother’s Day.

DWTS Season 24 Week 8 Costume Critique

The opening number of Week 8 of 'Dancing with the Stars' paid tribute to "Hot Summer Nights" - a big plug for the upcoming summer tour for the show.

This week each dancing couple performed double the dancing with Round 1 of 'Pro Picks' and Round 2 of 'Trio Dances'.

DWTS Season 24 Week 7 Costume Critique

Elegant, old Hollywood was the theme for the opening performance for "Dancing with the Stars" this week, with the Pro dance guys in traditional black tailcoat tuxedos with all the accessories, including a sprinkling of rhinestones on their lapels.

The Pro gals were stunning in silver leotards with lots of silver stoning and silver beaded fringe creating their sassy, short skirted costumes. Later in their routine, they added elegant silver mesh lame skirts with feathered hemlines over their original costumes. This is a good example of how to create two costumes in one!

DWTS Season 24 Week 6 Costume Critique

Week 6 of “Dancing with the Stars” presented a new theme: “Boy Bands vs Girl Groups”! As themes go, I guess it was OK…

Simone and Sasha danced a Samba to Destiny’s Child with both in fabulous costumes. The costume department took their cue from last week and designed and constructed a costume for Simone that had a very similar silhouette to last weeks – hence, it fit her frame well. The couple’s costumes were edgy/’Mad Max’ styled with leather-look and metallic stud trimmed – no ‘pretty/girlie’ trim for this routine. I enjoyed their costumes!

“Dancing with the Stars” started off with a truly ‘enchanted’ opening number, featuring Alfonso, and a couple of young dancers and the cast.

DWTS Season 24 Week 4 Costume Critique

This week was ‘Most Memorable Year’ on “Dancing with the Stars”. I admit that I have a Love-Hate syndrome with this particular theme. I am not a fan of sappy remembrances of years past, with the show needing to come up with a suitable song/performance for each ‘so called’ Star. ‘Latin Night’ or ‘Disney Night’, I always see images in my head of glitzy costumes, so always look forward to these themes.

DWTS Season 24 Week 3 Costume Critique

‘Dancing with the Stars’ started a new tradition this week, with ‘Vegas Night’. The opening sequence of dance vignettes was very fun, showcasing all the cliché’ Las Vegas activities. This theme is perfect for DWTS – with lots of corny, over-the-top songs and costumes.

DWTS Season 24 Week 2 Costume Critique

Posted by Deborah Nelson on Tue, Mar 28, 2017 @ 19:03 PM

This week on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ the festivities started out immediately with Nancy & Artem dancing the Cha Cha in simple, yet classic costumes. Nancy’s pink rhinestoned and beaded fringe costume with angled hemline and ‘V’ accented neckline with real straps was beautiful and flattering. Artem coordinated with a black sequin jacket with pink and black ribbed waistband and collar with a matching pink front facing along the front zipper closure, worn with regular black trousers. This attractive pair of costumes could compliment dancers of any age and most body shapes.

DWTS Season 24 Week 1 Costume Critique

This new season of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ started out with Show #400 – WOW, what an accomplishment! It was good to see my old DWTS “friends”: returning Pros such as Kym, Peta and Maks, along with those returning from last season. The opening dance performance was fun, in shades of blue, black and silver!
